OCTOPUS Vacuum Gripping System

The OCTOPUS Vacuum Gripping System has been developed to meet the growing demand for greater flexibility in robotic palletising and industrial vacuum handling applications.

Designed for maximum versatility, the OCTOPUS system can securely grip objects of almost any shape, size, or material, provided they are not excessively porous. Unlike conventional vacuum grippers, it requires no repositioning or replacement of suction cups, even when the contact area represents as little as 5% of the total suction plate surface. The maximum lifting capacity depends on the effective sealing area between the load and the suction plate.

Standard System Configuration

A standard OCTOPUS system consists of the following components:

  • Vacuum Generator – One or two compressed air-powered vacuum generators, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. These must be ordered separately, as they are not included in the standard system code, with the exception of model SO 15 20 MX.

  • Vacuum Chamber – A robust anodised aluminium chamber, open on one side and fitted with an integrated stainless-steel micro-mesh filter. The filter protects the vacuum generator from contamination while allowing quick and easy inspection and maintenance. The upper surface of the chamber includes one or more connection ports for the installation of vacuum monitoring devices or solenoid valves, enabling rapid restoration of atmospheric pressure when required.

  • Suction Plate – An anodised aluminium suction plate seals the chamber and features a series of precision-calibrated holes arranged at uniform intervals. The plate is covered with a specially developed perforated foam rubber layer that conforms to smooth, rough, or irregular surfaces, ensuring a reliable vacuum seal across a wide variety of materials. This design enables the same gripper to handle different products without adjustment—for example, lifting both cardboard cartons and the wooden pallets supporting them.

In addition to the standard models, OCTOPUS systems can be supplied in custom dimensions and configured with alternative vacuum tables and vacuum generators to meet specific application requirements.
